For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its tender shoots will not cease. Though its root may grow old in the earth, and its stump may die in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth branches like a plant.

—Job 14:7-9 NKJV

Our calling, our holy purpose, is not to get people out of the parched desert and into the Promised Land as quickly as possible. Nothing could be more dangerous for their souls. Our calling is simply to help them find the stream of living water along the way. But we won’t receive that calling until—like Moses, Jesus, and everyone who has truly made a difference in this world—we first find in the desert refreshment for our own thirsty souls. What the people around us most need from us is to believe that we believe in the sacred river.
